Newcastle, Portsmouth, Spurs and the WORST buys of the season
Huge amounts of money has changed hands to bring potential superstars in to clubs, but some deals have simply been a waste of money.

After a season full of highs and lows, which players rank amongst the worst signings of the season? In my humble opinion, there have been many terrible signings, but these are my top three:
Jose Enrique (Newcastle, £6 million): Jose who? Exactly. Bought by Sam Allardyce, Enrique became the worst purchase ever in Big Sam's managerial career. For £6m, he was supposed to be one of the best left-backs in the league, but he turned out to be slow and unskilful.
David Nugent (Portsmouth, £6 million): Before the season started, some managers were fighting over the signature of Nugent. How Harry Redknapp must be cursing that he got his man ahead of his rivals. Nugent failed to shine and has looked lethargic in many games. With no league goals to his name, he is destined to be sold in the summer. No doubt at a loss.
Darren Bent (Tottenham, £16.5 million): Top scorer for Charlton in many seasons, Bent made his multi-million pound move to Spurs, rejecting a more profitable deal from West Ham. Burdened with a huge price tag, he failed to light up the scoring charts like his fellow strikers. Becoming third-choice striker at the Lane, his appearances on the pitch led to the eventual departure of Jermain "I want to play" Defoe but eight goals to his name is a disastrous tally. Clearly an inferior player to Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov and even the departed Defoe. Money down the drain.
What do you think? Anyone worse than these three players?

darran bent has done nothing this season so a summer move will be great

Enriques good and young, Sam didnt play him, he started to adapt under Keegan when he was played regularly. He didnt have a pre season, is 21 and came to another country. Im looking forward to seeing him play next season, You really don't have a clue, Smith was Allardyces worst signing, followed by Rozenthal. So your argument fails before getting off the ground. Smith is the worst buy of the Season period!

written by a gunner!!!!!!!!!!!! Bent has not been a bad buy at all! he has scored goals and been a good squad member - just jealous because you dont have 16 mil to spend on a squad player! CNT!!!!!!!

Jose Enrique has actually shown a lot of promise in the latter part of the season and a damn sight more backbone than other left backs. If you feel you must do your bit for the ignorant southern anti Newcastle crowd, you could do worse than point out the fact that Alan Smith has done little/nothing to justify his expensive transfer and has rightly wound up on the bench. Biggest waste of cash in a long time.

It takes more than a season to shine and I will say that Darren Bent was a fantastic buy as he missed a large chunk of games due to injury. It was also difficult to get him to play when the older strikers(Keane and Bebertov) were in good scoring form and you do not change a partnership that is doing well. For the amount of time and matches he played, 8 goals is fair for the first season. What you have failed to realise is that a squad is being built at White Hart Lane and so, 3 good strikers are required and Darren fits the bill. Anyone who felt he would come in and displace Bebertov & Keane and score 20 goals is a joker. Next season, if he is fit and has more games, he will score more goals.

Ljungberg must be top of the waste of money list?

As a Newcastle supporter I can assure you I show no bias towards ANY of our defenders, but the previous comments are correct. Sam Allardyce refused to play Jose Enrique. It wasn't untilt he King returned that Jose got more playing time and began to flourish. He was never a logn ball defender and was never going to do well under Fat Sam. But The King certainly brought more of of Jose and that sweet left foot of his

Bent 8 goals when he was 4th chioce is not a bad record. how many have other clubs' 4th choice forward scored - shevchenko, saha, walcott,

Jose Enrique has improved with every game and will be very good with more experience in the prem (a bit more pace would be handy) but Newcastle's worst buy by a long long way is smith and then even for free geremi and viduka weren't worth it.

Enrique has showed a lot of promise since he signed and will be a good player for Newcastle once he is fully settled , Bent has not been a flop at all , he has hardly had chance and still scored goals . You really shouldnt be so jealous its bad karma
by ben warman on May 16, 2008
Got to agree, have you even been watching the last half of the season? Jose is definitely starting to show signs of a very competent lefback, defending well and contributing lots in the build up play. Smith is the worst Newcastle buy this season, I love his heart but he just doesnt have anything else to offer.

fredag idag! idag ska pungen rakas.
Schevchenko cost more than all of them put together!, Malouda's hardly lived up to his price tag neither, then theres that French fella West Ham signed that has played so many times that I cant remember his name!, then theres that Italian striker Sven signed for Man City! I dont understand everyones facination with Bent, Spurs havent even coughed up nowhere near 16.5 mill for him yet anywhere and he wasnt Spurs worst signing, Kaboul and Prince-Boateng were worst!

The worst buy of the season is the newcastle fans who but season tickets to watch that micky mouse club of theres.
by JJ on May 16, 2008
More crap obviously posted by a gooner. Although bent had a huge price tag this was mainly down to West Ham's attempt at buying him from Charlton. Bent didnt want to go to West Ham he preferred a move to Spurs, however Charlton after realising they could get 16mil for him from West Ham made Spurs match the offer. There first offer was 10million and Charlton rejected it. As for a flop he isnt..how is a player who has very few match starts, was 3rd and 4th choice striker and injured for large parts of the season, who has come on as sub and given it his all and still scored 8 goals how is that a flop, if he was bought for a lower amount he wouldnt be labelled a flop with that return. Your judging the flop theory on his price tag NOT on what he has actually achieved so far!! Shit article as per usual from this site!!

The worst buy was made by Mark Phipps in buying a computer. Surely you'd learn how to spell before trying to insult anyone on the internet! Incidentally, it's Mickey and theirs.

WORST BUY IS REYES,
by scott spurs on May 16, 2008
Almost every single person is having ago at Darren Bent! every time he appears in a Tottenham shirt he always puts in a great performance. Every striker needs games under his belt to prove what he is worth and Bent has not had the chance to do it. next season i hope bent makes more appearances and i can guarantee he will be a top scorer! a player of that magnitude cannot lose all his ability's and given the chance i bet he will become a regular England player
by Uros F on May 16, 2008
only an idiot can write such an article..enrique is good..he started to show his potential...and he'll become one of the best LB in the league... you didn't even mention the worst "player" in the league..smith!!! you talk about enrique, nugent and bent, but smith can't even play football... man..watch a game or 2 before you write about football...'cos you're clueless...
