Manchester United's Ronaldo, Liverpool's Torres and Everton's Lescott: It's easy pickings for the all-star team of the season

Normally when I look back over the course of a season I find it quite difficult to judge just who would fit into the Premier League all-star team, but this year I’ve found it to be much easier with a handful of players being so brilliant that it would take a fool to not select them.
GOALKEEPER
David James: The Pompey shot-stopper with the Premier League's all-time clean sheet record has easily been the best keeper this season, returning to his best form and staking a strong claim for the re-capture of the England No.1 jersey.
DEFENCE
Patrice Evra: Not the most attractive of left-backs but knows how to get his head down and work hard. Also a real attacking threat.
Rio Ferdinand: Most definitely the heart and soul of the Manchester United back line forming a fantastic partnership at the centre of defence with Nemanja Vidic.
Joleon Lescott: Knows how to both stop the goals and score them. Lescott was rock-solid at both ends of the pitch and really proved what a bargain he was from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Would be the perfect partner for Rio.
Bacary Sagna: Probably the most ridiculous haircut in the Premier League this season but, whilst preferably a left-back, I'd stick him on the right as he does the business for Arsene Wenger’s men anywhere across the back line.
MIDFIELD
Ashley Young: One of England’s stars of the future. Was a consistent threat down the left flank for Aston Villa with electrifying pace and an eye for goal. Even when teams starting getting wise to youngster, he still managed to do the business.
Cesc Fabregas: Faded a little over the second half of the season but, in the middle of the park, was one of the driving forces behind Arsenal’s dominance at the top for such long period.
Cristiano Ronaldo: Has to be the first name on the team sheet with a spectacular season seeing him break George Best’s record for a winger, scoring 41 goals in all competitions.
David Bentley: Another young England star who will only get better. Was a constant threat down the right with his fantastic delivery of the ball. Blackburn will do well to keep hold of the lad.
ATTACK
Fernando Torres: A sensational first season in the top flight, breaking the record for highest number of goals scored by a foreign player in his debut season, an honour previously held by Ruud van Nistlerooy.
Roque Santa Cruz: Blackburn’s talisman of a striker who always seemed likely to score at any given moment. With a little more support, he could have gone on to do even better.
MANAGER
David Moyes: A position that would have to be awarded to whoever clinched the much sought-after fifth spot. Moyes finally got the better of Martin O’Neill’s men at the death and thoroughly deserves to be recognised for his fantastic achievements at Goodison this year.

"whilst preferably a left-back, I'd stick him on the right" He is a right back!!!!! At what point did Sagna play on the left for Arsenal. This might have been a good read but that comment made me realise that the author probably doesn't watch football. How can you not know that Sagna is a right back??????

this team is seriously lacking a defensive midfielder
I didn't notice that Ronaldo is in central midfield. That's a new approach
by Darren Cowzer on May 16, 2008
James, Glenn Johnson, Vidic, Lescott, Evra, Bentley, Ronaldo, Fabregas, Essien, Torres, Adebayor. Moyes by a mile ;)
by Stuart Brandwood on May 16, 2008
Bentley did well but Mikel Arteta is surely worth a place. Don't forget that he was carrying an injury from February onwards.

Steven Gerrad, has become that good that we all forget about him now? The boy has scored 21 goals and also has 23 assists! How can he be behind young, bentley & Fabregas???

i think i've noticed a shocking oversight here...what about Bramble?
by usman ibrahim on May 16, 2008
How did u arrive at that ? To begin with Rio and Vidic are by miles the best centre back in Europe. And Evra,if there is a better leftback in Europe this soon i didnt see one.Yeah Lescot scored lots of goals this season but that was all there is to is game.Nothing spectacler about him.

nice article but I have some disagreement....Lescot .David Bentley and Young do not deserve a place in that team ... vidic and Rio should be in the centre of the defence while Flamini should be in midfield all football lovers are invited to join soccerfanbase.com for the best of news update and forum discussion

usman ibrahim you have no idea about football if you think theres nothing to Lescott's game apart from scoring. he has a great first touch. great header. bit of pace. and can pass the ball brilliantly. and also score some very good goals.

the only thing would be a lack of some form of defensive midfielder but this is only a team of XI im sure jason would have picked a player of that sort in a 16 man squad. SUBS: Reina/Vidic/Gerrard/Barry/Adebayor

How can you leave out Steven Gerrard after another season of goals, drive and passion from Liverpool's midfield?
by Anna Davidson. on May 19, 2008
One of the most under-rated players at Arsenal is emmanuel Eboue. Whenever he comes on he strikes fear into the other team. Eboue is like a secret agent, he knows when to appear and deal with the ball. Ramos has put in a bid for him.....but Wenger has done everything he can to keep Eboue.

Cech: Sagna Vidic Toure Evra: Ronaldo Fabregas Ballack Helb Torres Adebayor Manager Wenger !!!

How would you compare Gerrard to Fabregas. LFC you gotta be kidding me. Calderon himself said fabregas is the best in his position. Fabregas at 21 is considered part of the best 5 midfielders in the world and you open ur mouth and say Gerrard shld be chosen before Fabregas. My 11 would be Joe Hart(Man City) -GK Sagna(Arsenal)-RB Ferdinard(Man Utd)-CB Lescott(Everton)-CB Clichy(Arsenal)-LB Rona ldo(Man Utd)-RM Barry(Aston villa)-CDM Fabregas(Arsenal)-CAM Babel ( Liverpool)-LM Torres(Liverpool)-RS Eduardo(Arsenal)L S

Fabregas has got to be the most raped player in the Prem - Sky sports even had a cesc Fabregas special the other day - pathetic stuff. Yes he is a good player - but he disappears for 7/8 games then comes back with a goal and Sky are saying 'World Class'. Let me assure you, Gerrard is twice the player. Beckenbauer hit the nail on the head - There is nobody better than Steven Gerrard - he is the complete player. Gerrard scores around 20 goals every season as well as many assists.
on May 21, 2008 on May 21, 2008
These are the actual Prem league stats for the season: Assists: Fab 17 (1st) ; Ger not in top 10 (less then 9) Goals: Fab 7; Ger 11 Pass Accuracy: Fab 81.06% (1st); Ger 77.66% (4th) Minutes per chance created: Fab 25.5 (1st); Ger 27.3 (2nd) % of team assists: Fab 23% (1st); Ger not in top 5 (below 20%) Chances created per game: Fab 3.5 (1st); Ger 3.0 (2nd) Passes per game: Fab 72.44 (1st); Ger not in top 5 (less then 53) Cesc was probably chosen before Gerrard because, besides goals, all his other stats seem to be more superior.
