Normally when I look back over the course of a season I find it quite difficult to judge just who would fit into the Premier League all-star team, but this year I’ve found it to be much easier with a handful of players being so brilliant that it would take a fool to not select them.

GOALKEEPER

'Lescott was rock-solid at both ends of the pitch and really proved what a bargain he was from Wolverhampton Wanderers'

David James: The Pompey shot-stopper with the Premier League's all-time clean sheet record has easily been the best keeper this season, returning to his best form and staking a strong claim for the re-capture of the England No.1 jersey.

DEFENCE

Patrice Evra: Not the most attractive of left-backs but knows how to get his head down and work hard. Also a real attacking threat.

Rio Ferdinand: Most definitely the heart and soul of the Manchester United back line forming a fantastic partnership at the centre of defence with Nemanja Vidic.

Joleon Lescott: Knows how to both stop the goals and score them. Lescott was rock-solid at both ends of the pitch and really proved what a bargain he was from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Would be the perfect partner for Rio.

Bacary Sagna: Probably the most ridiculous haircut in the Premier League this season but, whilst preferably a left-back, I'd stick him on the right as he does the business for Arsene Wenger’s men anywhere across the back line.

MIDFIELD

Ashley Young: One of England’s stars of the future. Was a consistent threat down the left flank for Aston Villa with electrifying pace and an eye for goal. Even when teams starting getting wise to youngster, he still managed to do the business.

Cesc Fabregas: Faded a little over the second half of the season but, in the middle of the park, was one of the driving forces behind Arsenal’s dominance at the top for such long period.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Has to be the first name on the team sheet with a spectacular season seeing him break George Best’s record for a winger, scoring 41 goals in all competitions.

David Bentley: Another young England star who will only get better. Was a constant threat down the right with his fantastic delivery of the ball. Blackburn will do well to keep hold of the lad.

ATTACK

Fernando Torres: A sensational first season in the top flight, breaking the record for highest number of goals scored by a foreign player in his debut season, an honour previously held by Ruud van Nistlerooy.

Roque Santa Cruz: Blackburn’s talisman of a striker who always seemed likely to score at any given moment. With a little more support, he could have gone on to do even better.

MANAGER

David Moyes: A position that would have to be awarded to whoever clinched the much sought-after fifth spot. Moyes finally got the better of Martin O’Neill’s men at the death and thoroughly deserves to be recognised for his fantastic achievements at Goodison this year.
