Boring Liverpool? Arsenal and Manchester United can't match them for goals
Some areas of the media would have you believe that Rafa's Reds are all about containment and tactics, yet they have outscored the free-flowing Gunners this season. Do they deserve that 'boring' tag?

Rafa Benitez's Liverpool have all too often been branded as a team lacking any kind of creativity or style, instead preferring to focus on tactical rigidity, grinding out marginal results and relying too heavily on two players to score goals.
However, statistics from this year’s campaign go some way to dispelling this myth, with some figures threatening to debunk theories about other Premier League sides.
To start off, this year’s top scorers in all competitions have NOT been playing at the Emirates or Old Trafford. With 116 goals, English football cannot boast a team with a better record for hitting the net this season than the Reds of Anfield.
The combined talents of Arsene Wenger’s mercurial side have managed to score next best with 111, and Fernando Torres is taking Emmanual Adebayor all the way to the wire for second place in the scoring charts.
Another accusation levelled at Liverpool is that they are too reliant on their primary goalscorers, namely Steven Gerrard and Torres. However, just up the M62 there is a duo that contributes more to their team’s tally than this pairing. Of Manchester United’s 104 goals, 59 have been scored by Cristiano Ronaldo or Carlos Tevez, comprising 56% of the total. Liverpool’s twosome bagged 53 of 116, or 45%. So, it seems that this is another allegation without grounding, at least with regard to their North West neighbours.
Combine this with another stat published by the Liverpool Echo this week and the spread of goals throughout the team becomes clearer. With Ryan Babel’s belter at Stamford Bridge taking his season tally to 10, his name joins five others already in double figures for 2007-08.
Already Yossi Benayoun, Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch have struck at least 10 goals apiece this term, making Liverpool the only team in the land with such a sextet of scorers.
Chelsea are next with four members in the 10-or-more club, giving rise to the notion that the Anfield outfit are much less reliant on the finishing abilities of Stevie and Fernando than some might have us believe.
It is true to say that Arsenal play the more attractive football, and Manchester United’s flying winger has brought more plaudits than the endeavours of his Scouse counterparts. But Liverpool’s reputation as a boring side without a semblance of flair is unjustified.
The Reds will complete a second year without a trophy come May, but there can be little doubt that the margin in domestic football is closing. Last season, the points difference between Liverpool and the champions was 21. This year, assuming United and Liverpool win their one remaining game, it will be 11. If the gap continues to close at such a rate, a league title could be on its way to Anfield sooner than we think.

I think that's half the story, have Liverpool played more games? Their cup run in the FA cup and Carling cup was alot easier than say Manchester United (they went out third round, first match in the CC) who have only played Premier League opposition in the FA cup for almost 3 years, also this season they had, along with Chelsea, the hardest Champions League group, with Roma wanting revenge in every game against us. I think the league tells the better story as there are far less excuses and there Liverpool haven't outscored Arsenal or United and JUST out scored Chelsea and that's everyone playing the same team twice, I do think you really need to construct a fair article, overall they may have more goals but where fair is fair, they have less. These articles should be moderated before being put up, anyone can talk nonsense, it really drags down the quality of the site.

A team can defend for 90 minutes in their own half, have 5 counter attacks and score 2 goals. But they still defended most of the game so are thus a defensive side. Stats don't hide realities. Rafa is a defence first manager who loves the counter attack. He doesn't encourage the team to play attacking football in the opposition half whatever the stats say. He wants to defend and then score goals from as few attacks as possible. That's not attacking football where you want to dominate the ball and play in the opposition's half.

firstly, the most exciting part of football is goals, so alans blah blah of having less attacks but scoring in them doesnt matter even though that isnt even true.. most people judge liverpool by watching them in the CL, IF YOU BOTHER WATCHING LIVERPOOL AT home in the premier league you will notice that we attack like no other.. even the last year we scored the most goals at home in the league.. and the point about liverpool scoring in few attacks is rubbish when you consider one of the main critisms levelled at liverpool is not taking the chances they create.. and finally cup runs werent different by much .. we went out of both early .. in fact united had a better cup run in the FA cup and arsenal had a much better one in the league cup

1 Liverpool had an easy run in both domestic cups. 2 Besiktas are being investigated for match fixing- whack 8 goals off that total there. 3 Liverpool are long ball merchants, everyone in football agrees with that so dont even argue. 4 United has outscored you easily in the league; which is the only fair indication. 5 Yes it would be 11 points of a gap. Well done lol- sure start dreamin for next year sure

Liverpool have done well to close the gap to just 11 points. However, I think that Liverpool may have to wait a little longer to win the EPL than you hope. You forgot to mention that Arsenal have reduced the "gap" from 21 points last season to just 4 points this season.

How about the cl run that united had? They were seeded against weaker teams up until the semi.

Man Ure Scum, the facts are there, like it r not, in black and white. Liverpool have scored more goals than anyone else this season and are the only team to have 6 players scoring10 goals or more. And you say we are reliant on 2 players. Read the facts and get a grip! Приедьте в Челси, бейте ужасные экскременты Manc в Москве. Любой, но Человек Ер! YNWA. Work that out Scum.

i like this article.. liverpool outscored the top 4.. they werent as over reliant on gerrard/torres as man u was on rooney/ronaldo.. theyre the only team tat has more than 5 players wit double figures.. the problem is not in the attack.. they seem to have goals in them this year.. its the defenced tat leaked a little more than normal..

Liverpool are a boring team
Like it or not, in black and white, you'll win NOTHING this season, while United march on to Moscow after completing consecutive league wins dirty scousers like yourself will be crying in your pint and mouthing about how you hoofed the World force that is Besiktas. And how El Teen-o banged in hat-tricks against dominant defences like Derby. Just remember you've never won the premiership. And you never will. Its also quite funny that you've become our whipping boys. How many years is it since you beat us? or even scored a goal? lol. Nothing but long ball merchants
'Yan is right', I don't know you, I probably don't ever wish too as you sound like a typical arrogant Manc trollop who thinks football owes them something! Let me remind you of some facts.... Sorry, no need, you already know them! Now get back to your farming job in devon, (you do come from Devon, don't you?) HA HaHa. YNWA (well, you might!)

no, liverpool aren't the most bgoring, but come on, compare like with like! in the premiership liverpool were the only fourth highest scorers, well behind utd and arsenal and even behind villa! chelsea, for all their talent are certainly more boring, but, in style at least, man u and arsenal are clearly the style champs! and liverpool moved from 21 to 11 points behind? arsenal moved ahead of liverpool and improved from 21 to 4 points! even chelsea have got closer to united! simply stated liverpool one great scorer in torres and

Some very good stats there to prove that Liverpool are certainly not boring.
'Red Army' (or is it just you trying to have a big name coz there aint no army at Castle Greyskull, there again, you wouldn't know wud ya cockney!) Well observed, we will win nothing this season, again. And I am fully aware that we have not won the premiership yet, very aware. One thing i do know is that Man Ure are the most reliant on one or two players, the rest are average, with some getting too old. Bring on El-Teen-o as you southerners say! Ha ha get a grip, there is a fine line between 'Glory (which you hunt for) and greatness (which we have achieved) YNWA

what a joke - just because you put 6 past derby and 7 past beshiktas or grasshoppers zurich or whoever does not make you a good team
on May 06, 2008 on May 06, 2008
who gives a toss, they score there goals against wank like derby and besiktas, though when it comes to the big 4 in the prem they must have scored liek 2. 1 against chelsea, 0 against uinited and 2 against arsenal, well done liverpoool. i see you can really do it when it matters, 3 goals in 6 games, ratio of 0.5 goals a game, not bad for such an attacking team

compare the last few finals Liverpool's appeared in and man ure's. Man u haven't played anything in a meaningful final but a 1-0 yawn fest for years. Liverpool, on the other hand have in their last 5 finals have the following scorelines, which includes the greatest CL final ever, and the greatest FA cup final ever. CL 07 - lost 2-1 FA 06 - 3-3 won on pennos CL 05 - 3-3 won on pennos FA 01 - won 2-1 UEFA 01 - won 5-4 Without even counting the three LC finals they were in - that's 27 goals in five finals. That's the difference between Man U and l'pool. Man U really turn on the style against such giants as Bolton or Wigan, but when it comes to finals they are the most boring team imaginable. I for one won't tune in to the CL final this years - I couldn't bear another 1-0 Man U/ chelsea final like last years FA cup final.
