Rafa Benitez showed on Sunday just why all Liverpool fans want him out. I picture him being fired in a similar manner to George Banks' brutal sacking from the Dawes-Tomes-Mousley-Grubbs-Fidelity-Fiduciary Bank in Mary Poppins.

Rafa's Liverpool badge should be ripped from his chest and he should be summarily given the chop. Having him as manager is one long Groundhog Day of disappointment.

The Spaniard has already considerably devalued the Champions League by winning the competition with the most underhand of tactics possible - saving his energy during the league campaign and concentrating on Europe. In the year they won in Istanbul many forget that they limped to a fifth-place finish - being pipped to fourth by Everton.

'Liverpool are merely capitalising on the drudgery of the challenge for fourth place'

But maybe this is why Liverpool fans love Rafa. Their success in Europe is the perfect face-saving riposte to beatings like Sunday’s 3-0 mauling by Manchester United.

The fact is that Benitez has won the Champions League in an unconventional manner - completely eschewing league performance - and thanks to Istanbul, the fairy tale of success looms strong. Even if they get dumped out of Europe by Arsenal, Liverpool fans will still be able to cling to their Istanbul dreams. It is a comfort blanket of a result; the more they get battered in the Premier League, the harder they hold on to Istanbul.

Strip what was essentially a freak comeback away, and there is nothing underneath. Every year, with clockwork regularity, Rafa claims that he is going to try for the league, and every year he fails dismally. The number of people tipping the Merseysiders to win the Premier League this season was phenomenal, and yet they have presented nothing different from their limp, half-hearted title push.

To Liverpool’s dreaming fans, this season is always the year they are going to win the Champions League and next season is always the year they are going to lift the Premier League title.

Mentioned out of context, the Champions League is a glorious thing to win – but with the damning evidence that it was the only tournament Liverpool actually put any effort into that year – the trophy begins to lose its lustre.

Compare Rafa’s moment in the Istanbul night to a proper achievement, like Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble-winning side, and it looks piddling and small. The reason the Champions League is so glorious is because it is the step up from league dominance.

Liverpool are merely capitalising on the drudgery of the challenge for fourth place. There is no such thing as a 'Big Four' - that was just thought up from the arbitrary Champions League qualifying cut-off point.

Liverpool need to win the Premier League pretty sharpish to be dubbed a big team, something they won’t be doing any time soon with Rafa in charge.
