Lionel Messi: He'd suit Arsenal (gettyimages.com)
The transfer rumours and gossip being bandied about in the press is as wild and unlikely as ever. This bulletin also embraces Barcelona, Rangers, Manchester City, Birmingham, Manchester United, Everton, Celtic, Reading and Blackburn.
'I wouldn’t rule out a return to north London for Henry at some stage, but not anytime soon'
Rumours are circulating that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is not happy at the Nou Camp - and that has led to reports that he may be on his way out, with Arsenal said to be very interested (various).

The 20-year-old Argentinian was left out of the starting 11 at the weekend following a spell out with injury, but performed well once he took the field against Racing Santander. However, Barca are seven points back in La Liga and that has led to many tabloid hacks hinting at his supposed imminent departure.

You can apparently add Thierry Henry to that list, as the Frenchman is apparently unsettled at the Nou Camp and has also been linked with a move back to the Emirates (La Marca). Where does one begin with such stories? Well, the Henry issue has been raised many times since he left England in the summer; some sources say he is homesick, some say he just hasn’t got the heart for the game unless he is wearing a Gunners shirt.

Actually, he has managed 10 goals in 21 starts in a Barca shirt, which is no mean feat when you consider just how many attacking options Frank Rijkaard has at his disposal. That said, I wouldn’t rule out a return to north London at some stage, but not anytime soon. As for the Messi rumour, well that is pure speculation.

Rangers full-back Alan Hutton’s move away from Ibrox seems to be back on, with Spurs at the head of the queue to sign the £8million-rated defender (Daily Mail). It seemed the youngster had turned his back on a move to the Premier League after becoming the target of just about every major club south of the border, but now he has reportedly reconsidered.

It appears that the chance to up his weekly wages from under £10k a week to around £25k is just to good to turn down, and the move allegedly has the full blessing of Ibrox supremo Sir David Murray. However, has the chance passed? Man City, Everton, Birmingham City and Liverpool all seemed keen on 23-year-old Hutton, but will they trump Tottenham?

If all the players linked with a move to Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle were stood on top of each other, they would reach the moon. A slight exaggeration, maybe,  but nonetheless the amount of players supposedly on the Toon wish-list is astonishing and therefore my attempts to cover said rumours will be done in the form of short sharp responses as to their validity or otherwise.

Scott Brown (Celtic) - £4m (various). Possible.

Carlos Cuellar (Rangers) - £2m (Sunday Express). Enjoying life too much at Ibrox, unlikely to leave?

Nicky Shorey (Reading) - £5m (Independent). Distinct possibility

Ledley King (Tottenham) -  £15m (Mirror). Not going anywhere, apparently

Micah Richards (Man City) - £25m (Sun). Staying put at Eastlands

Pascal Chimbonda (Tottenham) - £8m (People). Not worth it

David Bentley (Blackburn) - £9m (Sun). Likely

Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham) - £30m (Mirror). Nope! Are you fed up with all the ridiculous rumours about Arsenal signing just about every superstar in the game when none of the deals ever take place? Post your comments below.

I heard about this Messi rubbish, your right it's just made up tripe. I think Henry will come back to end his career at the Emirates though so get your 2011/12 shirt with Henry on the back!
Georgie Jim (21/01/2008 15:40)
I think half of these players would be great, King and Bentley seem potentially plausible
head rover heels (21/01/2008 15:52)
At 9M, "likely" isn't a word i'd have used.
washington irving (21/01/2008 15:54)
Never read so much nonsense in my life. Messi to arsenal!! what?. Celtic paid almost £5M for brown in the summer and now he's leaving for £4M, yeah sounds plausable.
Rovers Fan (21/01/2008 15:54)
Why would we want to sell Bentley to the barcodes? The word likely should be preceded by a "not bloody"!!!
Faustino (21/01/2008 15:54)
...
Youve' missed the 8million ranked Van Buyten from bayern too.
Spursbhoy (21/01/2008 15:55)
why do you think King is plausible, maybe your thinking of Don King!!
CurioCT (21/01/2008 15:55)
you really think king would swap spurs to go to newcastle? moreover you really think spurs will sell their captain and best defender? Dream on
I think half of these players would be great, King and Bentley seem potentially plausible
jj (21/01/2008 15:57)
er
why on earth would king AN TO BE HONEST all those players even consider moving to newcastle, its made up crap!
Nathan (21/01/2008 15:57)
Do the 'writers!' on this website play games like Pro Evo and FM and think that the transfers they make in those games are reality? The articles get more silly with each passing day. Why would Barca sell Leo Messi? Where do you get the info? Adding (Various) seems to add substance to this. I think the (Various) is Football Mananger, Pro Evo, Fifa, CM2008 and the minds or dreams of the writers!
Stevo (21/01/2008 15:58)
RE: king and bentley seem plausable from the newcastle fan....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA do u really think u have any chance getting ledley....u have keegan tinted glasses on mate
paul (21/01/2008 15:58)
Why the hell would King leave a club like Spurs to go to bloody Newcastle??? Absolute tosh!!
Norway (21/01/2008 15:59)
Why would King leave spurs for Newcastle? He is not even back to full fitness
spursbhoy (21/01/2008 15:59)
i think we got it the first time Nath
Andy (21/01/2008 16:00)
Who is this who thinks that rovers would sell Bentley, one of the best player in the premiership for £9m. And another point why would Bentley want to go to a worse club. Blackburn are a team with Champions League potential, whereas Newcastle are currently a team with Championship potential.
Jimmy the tim (21/01/2008 16:02)
Celtic refused a £9 million bid from Newcastle at the end of the last transfer window. Why would they go back on that now for a ridiculous £4 million bid get real. Also hardly think using Carlos Cuellar as a back up keeper would be a mistake as he's barely a mediocre centre half haha
David (21/01/2008 16:02)
To Geordie Jim "I think half of these players would be great, King and Bentley seem potentially plausible" Why would we sell our captain and best player, who we've stuck by through his injuries, and has been at the club for TEN YEARS, to the joke that is Newcastle? And Berbatov?! I'm sure he will leave at some point, but our reserves would have more ambition than to go to St James'.. On that matter, why would Richards,Bentley or most of the others on that list move from bigger, better clubs?! Silly rumors... you'll be getting Rooney next
Nick (21/01/2008 16:03)
To the lad who thinks it's plausible that he would go to Newcastle, I must presume you are one of those geordies who have lost their grip on reality.
Yido4life (21/01/2008 16:05)
This is amongst the worst tripe i've ever read, messi to arsenal, maybe if they cough up 150 mil. As for king to newcastle who made this tosh up!? Why would he leaves spurs for a smaller club and a club destined for failure every season?
Steve (21/01/2008 16:06)
please be lies! no more henry please! as 4 messi!? that would b the worst possible thing i could imagine! newcastle in 4 berba? haha dont make me laugh newky. if he goes anywhere in england it will be to a bigger club that can offer more than we can. u all rave about keegan, a manager whos never won anything, and celebrate him as some kind of messiah?! berbatov is already playing 4 a top manager under Juande, y would he want 2 join u? oh yea because hes this MASSIVE Newcastle supporter, thats gonna sway him away from joining AC Milan or Barcelona or Real Madrid! Ledleys spurs thru n thru so thats a no go, but chimbonda is a mercenary, so ur welcome 2 him. another average spurs RB makes his way 2 St James' Park! ill stick 2 me west end theatre thanks, coz were not as passionate or deserving of good football as u down here!! haha, surely any geordie with half a brain (most of em) can see that hes just sweet talkin u all!! Haha, u gona go down with Derby!!!
Kevin Keegan (21/01/2008 16:06)
I think Cuellar is a world class player and with me bein KING KEVIN KEEGAN I like a challenge so will convert him to a keeper! as for Ledly King his name reminds me of that other brill player being ME KING KEVIN KEEGAN so no doubt I can buy him for peanuts and a few buttons watch this space!!!
chuck (21/01/2008 16:08)
A former Keegan player seventy grand a week, who knows? bring his defensive partner along Dunne, with Shorey on the left, Taylor partnering Dunne, not a shabby back line.
mike (21/01/2008 16:11)
typical keegan player 8million 29years old injury prone and passed his sell buy date
David Kirby (21/01/2008 16:11)
Why all the doubts about King, Chimbomba and Berbatov all going to Newcastle? After all don't you know Spurs are having a sale? Any 6 for 50 million quid.
Carl (21/01/2008 16:12)

Rick (21/01/2008 16:20)
Bentley for £9 million, think you might need to double that, he's class, I'd love him at City.
moods (21/01/2008 16:22)
scott brown for 4m? we paid 4 and a half 7 months ago! no chance. wouldn't sell him for 10!
GeordieScum (21/01/2008 16:23)
Everyone laughs at newcastle, even west ham and spurs. Biggest joke in the prem. Ledley King and bentley would never go there, its career suicide! Its where players go to end their days sadly. Poor old Newcastle, what a bunch of deluded idiots
Celtfan (21/01/2008 16:24)
what kind of a fool do people think we are Scott Brown is worth more that 4 million but Newcastle had there bid turned down and Carlos Cuellar will never be a goalkeeper never mind a center half which is the position that the hun's play him in
phily c yiddo (21/01/2008 16:24)
Im sorry king going to newcastle is tripe he'd never leave at the moment we have more potential then newcastle but they like trhrowing money about so they will get a few playey. But king will not leave he spurs thru and thru he stated he wants to emulate former spurs captins and lift trophies why would he go to a club who have one nothing for 50 years. Chimbonda is plausible as they pay 8 mill at least 50,000 a week but they can have him so im not worried. Berbatov well he may have suported newcastle but i think it was more shearer rarther then newcatle tbh but i don't think he'll go there he'll stay with us till sumer then go to a big club like manchester utd or abroad real madrid ac millan etc to a club who offer more then us.
d (21/01/2008 16:27)

unless any transfers actually happen i wont beleive it, I cant see arsenal paying loads for messi. i wudnt have a clue where he wud go shud he leave barca but i cnt see this happening anyway

Yido4life - a club destined for failiure every year - he's at one isn't he?
TonyS (21/01/2008 16:45)
Yeah why would Spurs ever lose their best players, apart from Carr, who went to.....err..Newcastle? Dont mention Carrick, Campbell etc etc....
colin (21/01/2008 16:47)
spurs equal points with the toon, poor seasons fired their manager stupidly. overall performance lower than toon. same with blackburn. so maybe their best players will come for millions to a bigger club, to play under a premiership legend. stop being so jealous its embarassing, your english maike a good show of yourselves
Spurs (21/01/2008 16:52)
Why the hell would Ledley leave spurs and his captainicy, to go 2 newcastle..?? What a joke :)
Beartie (21/01/2008 16:52)
Celtic should take the £4m for Goat Broon, as he has done little more than run around like a headless chicken so far, as for £10m LoL, Celtic and truth-oil and water, just does not mix.
muhamed hirji-0774078704 (21/01/2008 16:53)
I DONT THINK SO MUHAMED HIRJI 0774078704
For the pathetic "lets see if I can get a bite muppets" (21/01/2008 16:56)
NUFC are a small club apparently, so why is it that everyone keeps writing about them. Do you get NUFC fans harping on about any other club with the exception of the mackems, not really?
Ger-aldo (21/01/2008 16:57)
Cuellar - 2m? Ha ha ha Triple that. Compared to some of the mugs masquerading as centre halfs down south. Man has 10 years La Liga experience at the upper end of the table !
john (21/01/2008 16:57)
although king is a great player and I very much doubt he would come to newcastle, why would we want to sign another injury prone player? how often does he actually play
stu (21/01/2008 17:01)
how are they doing in europe?
Skip86 (21/01/2008 17:03)
Yeah Carrick and Campbell left for champions league clubs but Newcastle aren't in the same league as Man U or Arsenal. Dont think Ledley's goin to be handing in his transfer request any time too soon!
Estebanrey (21/01/2008 17:05)
I see the author has used the highly scientific method of assuming that as Newcastle are more "famous" that Bentley would move. Try a do a little research first...
chopper (21/01/2008 17:07)
why would anybody join newcastle?they go on about a great fan base well they are the only bloody team round there!!!!!!
michael (21/01/2008 17:07)
If Bentley is even the tiniest bit available from blackburn, then spurs shouldoffer lennon in a swap deal. Maybe even look at Nelsen at blackburn too - a no-nonsense centre half to partner King.
Estebanrey (21/01/2008 17:08)
NUFC ARE a small club, a small club that just so happens to have a lot of fans. When you say a club is "big" is more than just how many fans you've got, cups and medals play a big part too and one Newcastle lack. NUFC are a self-promoted big club but in reality no one has taken them seriously since 1998.
Thomas (21/01/2008 17:10)
What Thierry did for us was magnificant however he needed to go and hope he does not come back as a member of staff/board etc. He is a wonderful player but a self serving prima donna also, he would cast such a huge shadow over the club (the sort that the youngsters are now saying they feared) that it would hamper development not help it. Henry was great great player but to have in back in any capacity other than a fan watching the game would be folly indeed.
Davo (21/01/2008 17:12)
I cannot understand these poor deluded Spurs fans who think King would not want to comne to a far bigger Club than they will ever be, it is every professional players dream to play in from of 52000 passionate fans instead of half fill silent stadiums in the scruffy part of london. We have the cash to get the players we want....
stu (21/01/2008 17:14)
newcastle are toss! spurs are a bigger club than you. Its sad all newcastle fans they are the 4th biggest club in england! It must be bad to p*** off 52000 fans each week.
john (21/01/2008 17:14)
as for the person who talks about our support saying there is nobody else there, have you heard of sunderland they are 12 miles away and get 40k a week, and newcastle on population is only the 20th biggest city in the country (2001 census) so do your home work before you talk
Joe (21/01/2008 17:15)
Why would David Bentley go to Newcastle? Blackburn are a better club, (we won 3-1), We have a better Manager, not some guy who everyone else thinks is rubbish apart from Toon fans because you can't get anyone else. Bentley just signed a new 4 year contract in the summer. Hes staying. As for 9m, haha yeah right, at least double that!
Adam (21/01/2008 17:20)
It always amazes me (as a neutral) that Blackburn are seen as a 'farm' for other clubs! Bentley is a class act who worships Mark Hughes...he states he is the man who has single-handedly resurrected a career that was going nowhere. Newcastle will attract new players but, sadly for them, it will be those who only chase the £, NOT those chasing success. Newcastle are 'huge' based purely on attendance....nothing else! Likewise, Blackburn are regarded as small purely on lack of attendance. You can't question the history books and they all say one thing.....Rovers are a far more successful club than Newcastle inspite of their poor attendances. Bentley is currently one of the finest English players.....£9m doesnt't even come close to his valuation...remember that Duff went for £17m and, at the other end of the scale, Marlon King was over £5m. It would seem that on that alone Bentley must be valued at £20m in the current market. He wants success and will only move to a club that can GUARANTEE it and not just dream o
Davo (21/01/2008 17:21)
I think the poor old Spurs fans are starting to panic by the messages they are posting. They know they can't compete with the spending of the larger clubs like Newcastle and that they are likely to start losing there better players. Spurs peaked last year and will never makeit into the top six again, make way for the mighty Mags.
lee (21/01/2008 17:23)
Yay! More Spuds calling the Toon shite. How predictable .. and boring! Why would King want to move to a club like Newcastle? Why the hell would Newcastle want to sign a player like King, more like. Hopefully Ashley will dig deep so we can sign a couple of decent defenders now rather than 'biggest London club wannabe's cast-offs! .. and about bloody time!
PEM (21/01/2008 17:25)
Haha Newcastle fans are a laughing stock, keep it coming. King to Newcastle (a bottom half team at best) I unfortunately watched the Bolton game and found it hilarious. Middlesbrough are a ore adventurous outfit. Spurs are a bigger and better club, and this is coming from an Arsenal fan
azza (21/01/2008 17:25)
i see all these muppets saying why would king leave spurs , why would bentley leave blackburn ,right listen have a word with yourselfs why did henry leave arsenal why did van nistlerooy leave man utd we could go on for ever money talks ( not all the time but it does most times ) why did ronaldo leave madrid why did sol cambell leave spurs then arsenal it happens players like a change somtimes so newcastle could get SOME of these players it is possible once a couple of good ones come the rest will follow .
nathan (21/01/2008 17:26)
next newcastle will be having ferdinand and terry cos the toon and miles bigger than chelsea and manu put together. keep drinking the brown boys.

Bearing in mind the £100m is for this season, then if we win a cup (I know it's unlikely given our past history) then more money will be made available to have a crack at the EPL, so don't rule out us poaching your best players as they follow t

where did this absolute ridiculous price come from . To print this price i am sure must be a mistake on your behalf, or typical english mentallity to try to get quality from scotland on the cheap as usual. If cuellar is good enough to play in the premiership with a so called big club, do not insult our intelligence with a paltry £2M bid. Walter Smith i hope wouldn`t let cuellar out the door for Let´s say Around the £10M mark,or else he will be out the door for allowing our best players to be stolen. Also where the hell are we going to replace a player of his quality for a measily £2M. That figure would only get us a steven pressley or adam virgo

Why would any of them players leave their clubs for newcastleMaybe shorey, but the rest either play cl football or at least uefa cup, newcastle dont. And anyone who thinks they will anytime soon are deluded.Keegan has no european contacts,no scouting network and has been out of the game for ages, the game moved on miles every season. An emotional appointment is always a failure.sorry newcastle fans, but honesty is the best policy when it comes to keeping things in perspective. As an evertonian, ive had to go through torrid times, but we have stability and great foundations, unless someone does that there, you wont be challenging for anything.
