Why did the world No.1 choose to retire 10 days before the start of her favourite tournament? Surely the brilliant Belgian could have won a fourth consecutive French Open and had a final stab at Wimbledon before quitting.

A 6-3, 6-2 loss to Rafael Nadal in Hamburg on Thursday shows the Scot still has a lot to do to have a chance of major honours on the red clay surface. However, he is still on a learning curve and more matches against top players on clay will help him gain the experience he needs.
